Something Vague

December 2nd, 2005

I have been meaning to post this reveiw for awhile (since the beginning of November, actually), but am just now getting around to it. Lucas and I went to see Bright Eyes with opening bands Willie Mason and Sons and Daughters on November 8 in Boulder at the Boulder Theater. This was our third Bright Eyes show, making him our most seen band in concert. Every show has been completely different. The first time we saw Bright Eyes-in Columbia, MO at the Blue Note-we didn't really know what to expect. What we got was 3 opening bands (Azure Ray, Now its Overhead, and The Good Life) and the longest concert ever. Seriously, after the 2nd band we left and went to Steak and Shake, ate dinner, came back, and still got to see some of the 3rd band. I don't remember much which songs were played, but the most memorable part of the concert was when Bright Eyes came back out for the encore and halfway through the song (which was very very slurred), forgot the words and had to start over. I don't think he ever did finish...The 2nd concert was entirely songs from Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. That's all I am writing about that, because you can read my old review here. This time, we got a really great show. We were close to the stage (about 5 rows back) and it was a good mix of old and new Bright Eye's songs. The band included a harp, 2 drummers, a pedal steele guitar, keyboards, and guitar. The harpist had a beautiful solo intro for Sunrise, Sunset. Lucas was excited because they played one of his favorites, The Calendar Hung Itself. I was hoping for Bowl of Oranges or First Day of my Life, but no luck. They did play Nothing Gets Crossed Out and Hit the Switch, which I like just as much. The 2 opening bands came out and joined in on the encore. They played for just a little more than an hour. Bright Eyes actually played 2 nights here, and on the 2nd night they recorded it for etown which is a nationally broadcast radio show. It will be airing December 14-20. You can find a local or streaming station on their website.~Kelly
