Weekend Update

November 5th, 2005

So, it is 8:00 on a Saturday morning and I am wide awake. Does that mean I am old now? It seems I am finally on the mend from the sickness that eats other germs for lunch and then adds them onto my sickness. I spent 6 days home from work, 3 days in the doctor's office, 3 hours getting an IV for nausea and dehydration, about 100 hours watching court shows on TV, and have drunk 2 2-liters of 7-up, 1 liter of ginger ale, and about a glass of Pedialyte (which is disgusting, by the way...). I have been sick a total of 15 days now. The sickness is now reduced to an annoying, near constant, cough, stuffy nose, and sore throat. Woo-hoo! I have assigned store brand Robitussin to handle the important job of making me better. The doctor told me that since I work with little kids, I should expect to be sick every 4-6 weeks for 3 years. That news, friends, did not make me very happy. I have been told that Zicam can help stop you from getting sick if you take it at the first sign of symptoms. Does anyone have any personal experience with Zicam to back up those claims?Have a good Saturday~Kelly

YES! Zicam works.... I work in an office full of accountants. If we get sick during busy season, thus missing a day of work, we will be fired. But, several people in the office rely on Zicam to stay healthy and they have had good experiences. Although, I warn you, Zicam is kind of sketchy. You have to let a little tablet dissolve on your tongue, which dries out your mouth. However, the label has a very scary warning "CAUTION: DO NOT drink or anything for 1 hour after taking Zicam".....or you will die...

My mom swears by this stuff called "Airborne". It was developed by a teacher and I think its a combination of vitamins and herbal remedies--you can buy it at drugstores. I think you take it all the time during cold season (so all winter, I guess?) and it is supposed to keep you immune, or to lessen your symptoms when you do get sick. Maybe that will help.Sara Ferguson

Look this stuff up on the internet and you will see that one side effect is the loss of your senses of smell and taste. I suggest washing your hands alot and wiping down the tables and toys at school with Clorox wipes....daily.

Thanks for the tips regarding Zicam--I will probably hold off on that for now, based on the fact I'd like to keep my senses intact...I think Purell and Clorox will be valuable investments, though! And maybe I'll check into the Airborne, too..
