Doritos Taco Shell? Yes please.

As some of you may know, Phil and I are both big fans of Doritos. We even own Doritosfan.com but haven't really done much with it. This might be one of the greatest Doritos related announcements I have heard:

Mexican chain restaurant Taco Bell is reportedly testing the Doritos Locos Tacos, a taco shell made entirely of nacho cheese Doritos.

"Shut the front door and hand me a bib and some wet wipes to wipe the flavored dust from my trembling mouth!" blogger MB Quirk celebrated in The Consumerist.

The buzz surrounding the cheesy creation stems from the discovery of a July video making the viral rounds across the Web. In the footage, the willing taste tester exclaims that the taco is "everything I expected and more."

Sign me up. In other Doritos happenings, I had Tapatio Doritos last weekend. They were pretty awesome. Very spicy with a nice Tapatio finish.

This Things I Believe

I have officially run out of things to title blog posts with and am now just digging up obscure Simpsons lines. Hey, it's been almost nine years of witty (and not so witty) blog titles. The well has to dry up at some point. I thought I'd take the time today to share two things I am really enjoying. First, Evernote. It is awesome. Like Dropbox, I can have it running on all my various computers and my phone. Derick and I have a shared notebook for Pop Sickles and that is where I drop all the news stories I find to discuss on the show. On Saturday morning I just move all the contents into an archive notebook and start fresh. It also records audio notes when I am in driving and I can take pictures of things and make them into notes.

I can then email notes to my other awesome thing for this week, my Kindle. In addition to being a fancy digital notebook, I can also read books on it. Pretty crazy. I don't know why, but I have been reading way, way more since I got a Kindle. I am addicted to book samples. I am also reading A Game of Thrones right now, in preparation for the upcoming HBO series. I am really digging it. I also loaded in the PDF versions of the Microsoft books I am reading to study for my first MCP exam. So now when I have a spare moment I can study or read an enjoyable book, whichever I am feeling up to. It also plays Blackjack and Solitaire and some other cool games.

It's not a brendoman.com post these days without a shameless plug so here that is. Coming up on Bagged and Boarded we have True Blood's Deborah Woll and Michael McMillian along with comic artist Marc Andreyko on the show this week. I am very excited for that. Feel free to comment with any questions you may have for them and I will ask them on the show. On Friday Derick and I will be joined by writer Brian Lynch for Pop Sickles. For those not in the know, Brian is pretty much the funniest person on the planet. So that's what's going on with me this week. Hope all is well for all of you!

Hello Hello

Yes, I'm aware this is only my third post in 2011. Oh well. Things on my mind:

On the D&D front, the group I am DMing (Dungeon Mastering) for has made it a little past the halfway point of the fantastic Reavers of Harkenwold adventure from the new Dungeon Master's Kit. It has been a lot of fun so far. Here is a pic of Jason and John plotting their next move:

Black Box Crew

I am a little nervous about some of the upcoming encounters because they call for making your own battlemaps using dry erase markers or dungeon tiles. I have both but have yet to decide which to use. I like how this adventure ramps up the difficulty for the dungeon master, starting with basic encounters, moving on to more robust encounters involving more monsters, moving on to skill challenges, and finally to creating your own maps. It even gives opportunities to create your own encounters.

Anyways, enough of the geekspeak. In other things, aside from the Ricky Gervais awesomeness, I didn't really care about the Golden Globes since my favorite film of the year, True Grit did not receive any nominations in major categories. I did like The Social Network but I liked True Grit quite a bit more.

The new year brought a couple big changes for me. I have passed the two week mark on quitting smoking and I have also gone two weeks without an iPhone. I have been using a Samsung Captivate and it has been pretty stinking awesome, especially since my roommate Jon helped me root it and install Gingerbread.

That's about it from me. Hope you guys and gals are enjoying a happy MLK day.

Just Keep Moving

I would have posted more last week but I was moving. I still have one last load left. I moved back to Fullerton so I could be closer to work. Every move I tell myself this is the last time but that never really seems to be the case so maybe if I just stop telling myself that it will last longer this time. One can hope. If you're looking for something to do, check out Glue. I'm totally addicted to it. I think I'm just addicted to rating things and finding more things to rate.

Last Day of My 20's

I am leaving tomorrow morning for Vegas for my 30th birthday. Wow. 30. I'm trying not to make it a big deal, but when I think about 30 years and everything that encompasses, it's hard not to make it a big deal. When I think about all the stuff that has happened in the last ten years, I can't imagine what the next decade has in store. Maybe things will finally slow down. Who knows? So on the quick summary of recent events:

  • MC Chris put on an awesome show at The Troubador.
  • While the tickets were pricey, seeing Micmacs at the Arclight in Pasadena was one of the best theater going experiences I've had in ages. Awesome movie, awesome theater.
  • Smodcastle is going to be off the chain.
  • I don't have enough time for all the video games I have. Red Dead Redemption is awesome though. If you want to duke it out, my PSN is BrendoMan.
  • I'm going to Video Games Live tonight at Nokia Theater. If it's half as awesome as the last time I went, it should be pretty sweet.
  • Vegas!!!

That's pretty much it. Hope you all have a good weekend.

PDX!

Oh yeah, I booked my plane tickets yesterday for my trip to Portland next month. I'll be visiting my brother and attending a certain someone's wedding. No, I will not be flying Southwest. Good times!

Pitch Black

So yesterday pretty much sucked. I was home sick from work with a pretty bad cold. Around 10:30 the power went out. I then remembered a notice I had received saying there would be power outages between 9 AM Monday and 9 AM Tuesday. I had thought that was a window where there might be sporadic power outages. Nope. The power was still out when I left this morning. I'm not going to be that dude that complains that he couldn't watch TV or whatever. It just really sucked not being able to take a hot shower or cook anything while I had a 100 degree temperature. So I pretty much just slept in the dark and when I felt a little better I went to go eat. Then I slept some more and tried to read in the dark, but I had a hard time seeing with a flashlight as my eyes aren't that great. Now I really sound like Abe Simpson.

When it got so dark I couldn't see anything and I was starting to feel better, I went to the movies and saw Shutter Island, which I thought was really great. I thought it looked fantastic and the performances really made it wonderful. On a side note, I was a little perturbed when two couples walked in the empty theater and sat in the same row as me. They had the whole theater and they chose the row I was in. I don't know what the deal was with that.

I drove home thinking there was no way they would keep the power off through the night but I was wrong. Luckily my iPhone still had a little juice left so my alarm went off this morning as I woke up to more darkness and another cold shower. Worst sick day ever.

Stupid Smarch Weather!

Dang, where is 2010 going? Pretty soon it will be 2012 and we will all die in spectacular nonsensical Roland Emmerich fashion. Or something.

I finished Deadwood. As much as I prepared myself, knowing it didn't get a proper end, it was still a giant bummer when it was over. Amazing show though. I'm also working my way through Heavy Rain on PS3, which is incredible. I'm resisting the temptation to go back and fix what I think were mistakes. I'm just going to play all the way through on this story and then go back. It's tough though. I haven't killed any of my characters yet, at least.

What else...

We are making some progress on the Brax book as we will be publishing our 100th strip on Friday. If it wasn't for Phil's determination I'm pretty sure we would have missed 100 deadlines by now. Instead we have missed none. The book should be ready in time for Comic-Con and we will have our first copies for sale at DWEX. Of course it will also be available online since we are going to publish it through Lulu.

Enough shameless plugging. Holy crap, LOST. Am I right?

Call For Questions

In case you didn't know, I appear regularly on a podcast called Bagged and Boarded hosted by my good friends Matt Cohen and Jesse Rivers. I have a segment called The BrendoMan Minute where I talk about random stuff and answer questions sent to me from listeners. I had a nice backlog of questions going but then Jesse had to take a break from the show due to a move and I appeared as a guest host and had to do some extra Minutes and some other stuff happened so now I'm out of questions. So feel free to comment with your inquiries and I will respond to them and give you a shout out. Also, holy crap:

Yikes.

Here's to the Aughts: A Decade in Photos

I think the aughts sound kind of silly but I don't know what else to call it. All I know is I've had quite the decade. Read on for lots of photos.

This Is Halloween

This was going to be my costume idea but I couldn't find a Reagan mask or a decent prop gun. Mind you, I didn't look all that hard. Maybe next year. But I actually have a really good idea for a group costume for next year so maybe not. It's no Mad Men (last year's epic group costume) but I think it will be good. My vote for best costume this year though goes to Jeri:

Man, right down to the earrings and headband. Nicely done!

Mexican Coke Available at Target

If you are a big soda afficionado like me, then you know all about the awesomeness that is Mexican Coke.  The reason for its awesomeness?  Sugar.  Unlike our Coke, Mexican Coke uses pure cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.  This gives it a distinct and magical taste.  While it's not something I would recommend for regular consumption, it is a very tasty treat.  The only problem is it's a little hard to come by and it's sort of expensive.  Folks in places like Southern California are at a bit of an advantage because many Mexican eateries offer it but sometimes charge up to $2.50 for a bottle.  Anyways, the whole reason for this post is that I was in Target the other day browsing through their food aisles, which seem to have greatly increased as of late to compete with Wal-Mart, and found several bottles of Mexican Coke in the foreign food section, hiding next to the Jarritos drinks.  They are $1.25 a bottle, which is cheaper than most places I've seen.  I'm not sure if they are available in other locations or maybe it's just a regional thing, but it's worth a look.  If you can't find Mexican Coke in your area, you can always order it online from the super awesome Soda Pop Stop.

Look in the sky!

My friend Amy made this to celebrate my success at the new job. Sorry about the sparse updates. I'm going to be updating our b2e install tonight sometime so there might be some hiccups.

If anyone has some things they would like me to post about or if you just want to speak your mind, feel free to comment. I haven't seen a movie in the theaters since G.I. Joe and I saw that for free. Things were super tough for awhile towards the end of the great unemployment stint. I did go to a test screening for Jason Reitman's Up in the Air, which was brilliant. I also saw a test screening of Zombieland, which I believe comes out next weekend. I highly recommend it.

One More For Fantasy Football!

We need just one more person for our Fantasy Football league. Did your team in your current league get destroyed this week? This is your chance for a fresh start! Scroll down for more details.

In other news, the job is going really great but it's taking up pretty much all my time. When I get home I pretty much just want to relax, eat, and watch TV. I'm finding it much more difficult to jam everything I want to do in before I have to go to bed. I guess that's how it is.

In My Life

I don't have much to say right now except work is pretty darn good, the new Beatles remasters are pretty magical, and I want The Beatles Rock Band more than anything right now. I'm being a good boy though.

Oh! Tomorrow marks the release of the 50th strip at Brax the Alien Rocker. I'll probably post about in again in case you all forget, but Phil and I are both pretty happy about it. We are actually going to have a table at the Los Angeles Comic Book and SciFi Convention on Sunday where we will be passing out free stickers and giving high fives. If that isn't enough to get you there, Larry Hama (creator of the G.I. Joe comic) will be there with several of the original G.I. Joe cartoon voice cast as well as Juliet Landau of Buffy and Ed Wood fame.

Free Stuff!

If you live near me or know someone who does, feel free to respond or pass on this information!

Hello! No, I am not lying, this stuff is free. What is the catch, you ask? Well, you have to pick it up by Saturday afternoon the 29th at the absolute latest, preferably earlier at my apartment in La Palma and there is ONE (1) flight of stairs. Okay, still with me? Here are the goods:

Kitchen table

This is a great kitchen table with four (4) matching chairs. It also comes with secret drawers on each side, ideal for napkins or other things you don't want your guests to see. There is also an optional fifth non-matching chair but you don't have to take it. You might hurt its feelings though if you don't.

Microwave

This microwave will cook your food and can also serve as a clock and a timer. It spins food around too! Sorry, the Tabasco sauce and paper towel tube are not included.

Tv

This giant TV is broken. I don't know how to fix it. It is pretty old. If you think you can fix it or want some giant thing to really tie the room together and maybe put your xbox on, it's yours. However, it is really heavy and will require probably three people to get it down the stairs. And there are no give backs. You have been warned. HOWEVER, if you agree to take the TV, I will give you priority access to the microwave and/or table and I will give you some stickers from our webcomic, Brax the Alien Rocker (http://braxcomics.com). Also I will give you a high five. This TV has an amazing two (2) RCA inputs!

So like I said, any of these can be yours for no cost (0) if you are willing to come pick them up by Saturday afternoon at the latest. People who can pick them up the earliest will be given priority. If you want the TV, you get absolute super double secret priority.

Feel free to comment if you are interested and I will get back to you, or email me at brendoman AT gmail DOT com and I will get back to you ASAP.

Thank you!

We Used To Vacation

So I'll start with the awesome news that tomorrow I'm signing the lease on a new apartment and hopefully sometime next week I should get the official word that I indeed will be employed. A background check is currently being run and I don't have any priors as far as I know so I think I'm good. As the saying goes, when it rains it pours.

Tonight I met up with Phil and Janelle and many old friends to see Cold War Kids play in Long Beach. It was a reunion of sorts as Matt Death also played and in case you didn't know they feature many former members of a band I am very fond of called Havalina, a staple of my early college years. Phil used to do sound for them and even appeared doing hand claps on their album America. Phil was also a member of a band called Thee Spivies and tonight we were joined by two other members of that band, Clark and Ivan. Seeing so many people from such a fond part of my past really brought me a lot of happiness tonight and to wrap it all up was a phenomenal performance from Cold War Kids, the biggest success of all our friends' bands. It was a great time and a great way to celebrate all the good stuff happening. Here's to even more memories in the future...

Moving Along...

So the plans for the big move are progressing. Once I get paid this Saturday I plan on moving forward with narrowing down all my options and putting a deposit down somewhere. I've been looking everywhere and there are a lot of good options. I'm no longer freaking out, thinking I might end up homeless in 18 days. So I've got that going for me, which is nice.

Anyways, posting might be a little sparse for awhile because I'm trying to get a jump on packing for once and I'm still pounding the pavement on the job front. I've also got some new freelance work I've been working on, trying to scrape up some extra cash. So that's what's going on. If you're looking for something to fill the void, check out the latest Bagged and Boarded, which features a Tracy Morgan introduction and my Comic-Con Minute. If you ever told me that Tracy Morgan and I would indirectly share airtime on anything, I would shake your hand and say thank you. You can also check out this comic that some chumps made.

So as the saying goes, the road goes ever on. I guess it's time to take those next few steps.

Lazy Days

Janelle is off school so I've been kicking it with her and Phil quite a bit lately. Today we walked to Del Taco and this conversation occurred:

Brendan: Hey, check this out, three chicken soft tacos for $2 on Thursdays.
Phil: Really! That's tonight, we should get that.
Janelle: No, that was yesterday.
Phil: Wait, it's Friday?
Brendan: Guys, it's Wednesday.

Yeah. That really happened. Still waiting to hear back on the big job that will ease all my pain. No big plans until we roll out to Comic-Con next week except for a free The New Limb show at La Cave in Costa Mesa on Friday night. Should be a good time.

Sorry

Ghostbusters game. Catching up on TV shows: Madmen, Weeds, and Dexter. Not to mention that pesky job hunt thing.

My pal Jesse and I saw Black Dynamite on Thursday at the L.A. Film Festival. The screening was at the outdoor Ford Theatre, which turned out to be quite amazing. The movie was a blast. I haven't laughed that much in a long time and it's one of the most quotable movies I've seen in ages. My apologies to Michael Jai White for any bad things I said about him after watching Spawn. He's definitely redeemed in my eyes.

Hope you all are having a good weekend. If you're looking for something else to check out, how about the music of The New Limb? They're playing their final show of a month long residency at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa on Monday and man, they are just amazing to watch. Phil said it best that it reminds me of seeing Cold War Kids up there just a few years ago. Very similar energy and quite the huge crowd. You can find out more by checking out their interview with Brax.

Hope you guys are having a good weekend.

Forget About My Birthday...

We're only two days away from the release of Ghostbusters: The Video Game. I earned a $25 Gamestop card from E-Rewards and I'm really hoping it comes in the mail before then, otherwise I'll have to wait to buy the game I've been looking forward to pretty much my whole life. While some might think that sounds a tad dramatic, anyone who has played the original Ghostbusters game knows exactly what I'm talking about.

On the job front, a friend of mine got me a phone interview at his company for a tech support position and now I'm just waiting to hear back about an in-person interview. People keep asking me what I want for my birthday and the only thing I can really respond with (besides the aforementioned video game) is a job. I'm hoping that wish will come true very soon.

School's Out

I had my last day of class on Tuesday.  For my final web design project I did a redesign of brendomanproductions.com.  It uses tables and frames, which I’m not too proud about, but they were required.  I am looking forward to next semester where we will be using Dreamweaver CS4, which uses CSS extensively.  I did learn a bit of Flash and I’m pretty proud of that.  One of these days I’ll throw up the little movie I made.  Right now I’m just kind of relaxing and enjoying the down time.  I got Peggle for my iPhone and now I’m pretty addicted.  I am going to be kicking the job search in to high gear pretty soon, which will include getting a haircut and shaving.  Yeah, I’m really going to do it.

Heatwave

When you wake up in the morning and this is what you see on weather.com, what do you do? If you answered go on a field trip with a hundred second graders to the La Brea Tar Pits, then you and I were on the same page. I accidentally left my phone at home so I didn't get any pictures, but it was a lot of fun. I went with my friend Janelle's class and had some fun being "Mr. Creecy" for the day. Even though I've lived in Southern California for most of my life, I had actually never been to the pits before, despite the fact that they are prominently featured in many movies. Despite the heat, which rose to about 105 at its highest, I had a great time.
