WTF of the Day: Chris Klein Mama Mia Audition Video

I have doubts that this is real, but man, look what you did to him Katie Holmes! Seriously, yikes.

UPDATE: The video got taken down from Youtube so I'm throwing up the link from FunnyorDie.

WTF of the Day: Movie Ticket Price Increases

I already thought movies were too freaking expensive. Then 3D came along and jacked up the prices. Now it appears the increasing popularity of 3D is resulting in yet another ticket price hike.

Ticket prices will be going up at movie theaters across the country this weekend as the entertainment industry looks to cash in on growing demand for 3-D movies following the success of "Avatar" and "Alice in Wonderland."

Starting Friday, prices for adult admission to 3-D movies will increase an average 8.3% at box offices nationwide, according to market research conducted by investment firm BTIG. Ticket prices for IMAX movies are expected to jump 10%, while prices for regular 2-D movies will rise about 4% on average.

Seriously, for the cost of that ticket I can buy the movie and watch it in my home in peace. Boo!

WTF of the Day: Frys In Store Pickup Is Useless

So I want to buy a Wii. Apparently between Saturday afternoon when I saw Wiis everywhere and last night when I went to buy a Wii, everyone went Wii crazy and bought them all. They were sold out everywhere in my area. So just now I went to Frys.com and was very excited to see that the Wii was available for in-store pickup according to their site. This is the screen I saw when I tried to check out:

Hooray! I can go pick up my Wii after work and that is the end of that business. Nope. Sorry. A couple minutes later I get this email:

Dear Brendan Creecy,
Your order IS NOT READY for pick up because the following items are not available in the store at this time:

Item(s) Req Qty Aval Qty
WII HARDWARE CONSOLE 1 0

You may come to the store list below to pick up your available item(s) if desired or follow this link to cancel your order. Frys.com apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

WTF???? I feel like Jerry in that episode of Seinfeld when the rental car lady tells him they have no cars available after he made a reservation. The stinking site said "available." I don't think Frys.com knows what available means. Seriously.

WTF of the Day: Titan Robot

Forget that little blob thing, this guy is part T-800 and part Cylon. Yikes. Look at how fast it is! It has hooves like a freaking Cyberdemon from Doom! Thank goodness it is just a dude in a suit. A very fancy suit, but a suit nonetheless. If this were an actual robot, I would probably be heading for the hills right now.

WTF of the Day: Jumping Great White Sharks in SoCal

Okay seriously, I've never been that scared of sharks but after seeing these pictures and reading the reports, I don't think I'm ever going in the water again.

On September 28, 2009 Steven DaPena was surfing between Dogpatch and Old Man's at San Onofre State Beach. It was 10:00 AM and he had been on the water one hour. The sky was clear with an estimated air temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit. The sea was calm with an estimated temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The water was about 8 feet deep over a sandy ocean bottom with 15 – 20 feet of visibility. No marine mammals were observed in the area before or following the encounter. DaPena reported; “About 6 of us had seen what appeared to be an 8'+ White Shark breech completely out of the water about 200 yards out from where we were surfing. About 30 minutes later my friend John said he saw what appeared to be the same shark swimming right beneath us, moving South to North very slowly. About 5 people decided to get out of the water at this time. The White Shark was at least 8 feet in length, with a substantial girth and a white underside and grey top.” Please report any shark sighting, encounter, or attack to the Shark Research Committee.

If I saw an 8' shark jump out of the water while I was surfing, I'm pretty sure I would crap myself. Props to Steven for not doing that. Or maybe he did and just didn't include it in his report. I'm pretty sure someone witnessing that did.

WTF of the Day: Petition for Polanski Release

So in my previous post about Roman Polanski's arrrest Kyle wanted to know who was defending him. How about an insane amount of directors whose work I love. Holy crap, seriously guys? Really?

We have learned the astonishing news of Roman Polanski's arrest by the Swiss police on September 26th, upon arrival in Zurich (Switzerland) while on his way to a film festival where he was due to receive an award for his career in filmmaking.

His arrest follows an American arrest warrant dating from 1978 against the filmmaker, in a case of morals.

Filmmakers in France, in Europe, in the United States and around the world are dismayed by this decision. It seems inadmissible to them that an international cultural event, paying homage to one of the greatest contemporary filmmakers, is used by the police to apprehend him.

Yeah, raping a 13 year old girl is a "case of morals." You know, I usually think liberal Hollywood gets a bad rap, but you guys are just making yourself look bad. As Kyle said in his comment, and I firmly believe as well, if this was some normal dude who raped a girl 30 years ago, plead guilty, fled the country, and was finally arrested, you guys would be on the streets cheering and screaming for his blood. This is absolutely ridiculous behavior from these folks who I normally respect and they should be ashamed of themselves. Am I wrong here?

WTF of the Day: Splat Balls

Phil and I were browsing the clearance section at Wal-Mart the other day and were amused by this:

Splat Balls

If you think the product name is funny, then check out the first warning message:

Warning

I really think they could have worded that a little better.

WTF of the Day: Illegals

This really doesn't have anything to do with anything, just something I have noticed over time and heard from the mouths of a lot of people I thought were better than that. I'm talking about folks who call any Mexican or Latin American they come in contact with an illegal. I'm not crazy thinking that's screwed up, right? I mean, I've heard people say things like that immediately followed by the "but I'm not racist" caveat. Except you are. Sorry. You see a person who might not speak your language and looks different than you and you are judging them based on that. Unless you checked that person's papers, I think you're making a pretty snap judgment. Sorry, I don't know where this came from, but I hear it quite a bit in my neck of the woods and I thought I would address it.

WTF of the Day: Insulting Your Target Audience Doesn't Work, People

Two things that were brought to my attention today are PETA's "Save The Whales" campaign, detailed here and the ThinkB4YouSpeak campaign. Les puts it better than I can about how the whole insulting people to try and get them to stop insulting people probably won't work. Not to mention the people they are really trying to change are pretty much not going to respond to any kind of "Hey, don't do that kids!" kind of message. The vast majority of gamers I know don't use those kind of words. So yeah, we're going to be insulted when you generalize us and then insult us in your advertising. Go ahead and make fun of jocks and cheerleaders all you want though.

As far as the Save The Whales thing goes, I shouldn't be surprised by something like this coming from PETA. For a group who claims they are so progressive and accepting and whatever, they sure do like to insult other people. Then they get mad when others insult them. The vicious cycle continues. But hey, what do I know, I'm a lazy gamer whale who has no friends according to these people.

WTF of the Day: Cyberdyne is Real

Yeah, you heard me. Cyberdyne is a real company in Japan. Did I mention they are building a "cyborg-type robot" that you wear as a suit? This both fascinates and terrifies me. Thanks to /Film for the heads up.

WTF of the Day: Paul Scheer's Michael Jackson Auction Photos

Michael Jackson Auction: My Favorite Items

If you haven't heard, Michael Jackson auctioned off all the stuff at his Neverland Ranch. Comedian Paul Scheer was there to get the more bizarre and noteworthy of the items on camera. There's a finger painting by Macauley Culkin, some bizarre paintings of children, really creepy life-size dolls, a Batman suit, and lots of other stuff. Yeah...

WTF of the Day: Obama and Satan

YouTube - OBAMA TELLS AMERICA - "Serve Satan!" - This will floor you!

Yeah... I don't really have a response to this except that I love how the guy who posted it says it is "just for fun" but if you look at his other posted videos you can see he isn't really the joking type. On the flipside, I know this isn't unique. Since the beginning of our country, I'm pretty sure every single president has been labeled the Anti-Christ. It's just that adding this whole backwards masking thing, especially with a live speech, takes it one step beyond insane. Props to Boing Boing for being awesome.

WTF of the Day: School Issues Alert About Vampires

Vampire rumors prompt Boston Latin alert - about bullying - The Boston Globe

Boston Latin School headmaster Lynne Mooney Teta issued a notice to parents and students yesterday quashing rumors of vampires at the school. An odd move for the head of a historic elite preparatory school, but Teta and Boston public school officials declined to elaborate on what triggered the unusual message.

If my kid's school issued a statement like this, I think I would be shopping for another elite prep school. I'm aware they were mostly responding to the bullying aspect of the situation, but the fact that they felt the need to quash rumors of vampires on campus kind of blows my mind.

WTF of the Day: Let the Right One In Ruined by DVD Subtitles

Icons of Fright News and Updates: Let The Wrong Subtitles In To LET THE RIGHT ONE IN?!

About 20 minutes into the screening, I was absolutely horrified.

The subtitles had been drastically changed since the last time I saw it, and dare I say... had been completely dumbed down? Sure, the basic gist of what the characters were saying was kind of there, but missing completely was the dark humor, subtleties and character nuances which made the movie so powerful and a favorite amongst audiences last year. I tried to carry on and ignore it, hoping that only a few of the translations were off... but... I was wrong. Just about the intent of every single line of dialogue was completely off and ruined the movie.

I actually watched this for the first time last night and since I hate dubbed movies I turned on the subtitles instead. I loved the movie, but I felt like something was lost in translation a bit. I'm glad to know it wasn't just me and it wasn't the film itself. I'm sure most folks won't even notice but it's a real shame when something like this happens to a foreign movie release, since they have so much working against them already. I really hope this is rectified, especially since I was considering purchasing the DVD. It's a great movie. It looks amazing. It's really creepy but also beautiful at times. Definitely a great twist on the the vampire genre. Hopefully the power of the internets will rectify this.

WTF of the Day: High school cage fights

I just about did a cartoon double-take when I read this headline:

Report Says Principal Put Students in Cage to Fight

But then I saw that this happened in Texas, and I said to my self, "Of course it did."

The principal of South Oak Cliff High School, Donald Moten, was accused by several school employees of sanctioning the “cage fights” between students in a steel equipment enclosure in a boy’s locker room, where “troubled” youth fought while a security guard watched, according to the confidential March 2008 report first obtained by The Dallas Morning News.

WTF of the Day: Death a Funeral Remake

Over the years I have posted a lot of stupid movie news on this site. I never cease to be amazed by the dumb things those folks in tinseltown come up with. This news that Screen Gems is remaking Frank Oz's Death at a Funeral is possibly one of the stupidest things I've ever read. Why is it so stupid? This movie came out only two years ago. It's not a foreign language movie. It was directed by an American director and had a mix of American and British actors. It was a really great movie. Now, I know that just like book adaptations the original will always be there but man, something just really bothers me about movie remakes like this. I don't know why. My brain tells me I should just treat them like cover songs, but for some reason I can't.

WTF of the Day: Mayor of Los Alamitos' Racist Obama E-mail

Los Alamitos Mayor Resigns after Sending Racist Obama E-mail - LAist: Los Angeles News, Food, Arts & Events

A watermelon is only a watermelon until you depict it in the front lawn of the nation's most power man, who happens to black. "No Easter Egg hunt this year," read the subject line of an e-mail with this photo attached. It was sent by Dean Grose, the mayor of Los Alamitos, a small city of 12,000 people east of Long Beach.

Wow. I knew there were some whacked out folks here in Orange County but this is pretty ridiculous. If you're a public official, why the hell would send this kind of email to people? I mean, you shouldn't be sending an email like that at all but what did he think the result would be?

WTF of the Day: Parents Complain About Woman With One Arm

One-armed presenter is scaring children, parents tell BBC | Mail Online

A disabled CBeebies presenter has been the victim of a disturbing campaign after parents complained that she was scaring toddlers.

They claimed that host Cerrie Burnell - who was born with one arm - is not suitable to appear on the digital children's channel.

Miss Burnell and co-presenter Alex Winters took over the popular Do and Discover slot and The Bedtime Hour programme last month.

It's stories like this that just make lose a bit of my faith in humanity. I don't even know how to respond to something like this in civil way.

WTF of the Day: Buyer Beware at Circuit City Closeout

Customers Burned In Circuit City Closeout Sale - As Seen On NewsCenter 5 Story - WCVB Boston

Customer Gina Reis paid $1,100 for a big screen Samsung TV at the liquidation sale, only to get it home and discover it was completely unusable.

"It's shattered from here all the way up, and then on the other side as well," said Reis.

When the couple took the set back to the store ... "They said, 'Sorry, your problem, not ours," Reis said.

Wow, that is a bummer. If they're not letting people inspect the merchandise before purchasing it, that's pretty damn shady. It sounds like they aren't even inspecting returns at this point and some of them are making it back out onto the floor. If you can't open the box, maybe you can at least give it a little shake.

WTF of the Day: Mass Effect 2 Teaser

Mass Effect 2 - Teaser

For some reason you have to enter your birthday in order to watch the teaser but once you do that you'll be treated to a little surprise. What does it mean? I'm not really sure. I just hope I'll be able to continue as my character like they said we would. Mass Effect is still probably one of my favorite games ever and I'm really looking forward to this one. The other big question: Will we see it this year? I sure hope so.

WTF of the Day: Tucson Superbowl Porn

Yesterday I got a voicemail from Gringo that said something about porn and the Superbowl in Tucson. I didn't quite understand what he meant until I got home and read this:

Tucson, Arizona was probably not the best place to watch the game last night. Partly because of the disappointing result, but mostly because of the huge, flapping penis.

With under three minutes left and just after Larry Fitzgerald's heroic comeback(ish) touchdown for the Cardinals, the video feed abruptly switched to a scene from stablemate channel Club Jenna, treating viewers to the sight of seemingly omnipresent porn guy Evan Stone swinging his junk around like a maniac. This interlude lasted about 30 seconds.

Wow. Imagine if this had happened on a larger scale. It would make Nipplegate look like Sesame Street. That's still a lot of customers though and I'm sure there are a lot of upset viewers. I'm guessing Gringo witnessed the whole thing first hand so I'd like to hear his thoughts.
