Weird thing of the day

www.myspace.com/augustana

Apparently these guys are pretty popular. The lead singer, Dan Layus, was in my youth group when I was a leader there while in college at Biola. In fact, here is a picture from a car rally scavenger hunt of us wearing women's clothing at Red Robin. Dan is the skinny kid in the front on the right.

He was a funny kid. I left quite a history when I graduated and he was always asking me, "Did you actually..." and "Were you the guy who..." questions. I don't know why, but a lot of people still ask me things like that. Anyway, when I told my brother, he wasn't surprised. He said that the first thing Dan ever talked to him about was his band.

This isn't the first time a school chum has become a huge rock star. I was in band and some other classes with Tim Foreman from Switchfoot in Jr. High. He was probably one of the only "cool kids" who was nice to me during those dark, dark years. So I'm really happy for him.

Meh. I saw them open for Embrace at the Troubadour. The lead singer has his mouth right on top of the microphone while he sings, and he's a spitter, so that was gross. He also did a continuous leg tap at a high speed with the same leg through the entire show. And his eyes were always closed, so there was no audience interaction. Their music was very generic too, but I guess that's what the kids like these days!

Yeah actually I was going to make the same observation. I saw them open for Our Lady Peace last October at the Hard Rock in Orlando. Funny enough I remember exactly the same thing, he spit and was too hyper. They also reminded me of a pathetic attempt at bad SoCo music.... heh

Yeah that's dan layus--the prominent jaw bones are unusual.

Addendum: Dan doesn't spit anymore. I was in the front row at the Tucson show. I notice that no matter what the situation his hands are always moving. I think it's a condition and not necessarily external chemicals. Anyway, Augustana is huge now. Mayfield EP is a classic with standard after standard. Good luck to them.

Nice comment about Tim Foreman. It's always good to hear that members of bands who write such meaningful music are really who they seem to be.

Hahaha that picture of Dan is so funny!! He's a great guy. (I recently saw them [Augustana] live and loved them. What's with the haters?!) So is Tim Foreman. I enjoyed those sincere words on him.
