i'm not so sure about that. the difference b/t a note to your friend is that the internet is a public forum by nature. and if i really need to vent privately, i should do that in an email, or even an im, which are also not completely private, but a blog is very public. anyone can access it. i think people need to be held responsible for their words, good or bad. if i stood up in class and said, mrs. smith, i am going to kill you, b!tch, there would consequences for that too.

I wasn't really clear in my last paragraph. I meant to state that because blogs and other similar websites are public, they should be scrutinized. And there should be consequences.

I don't know how that will work with free speech rights, but it may be a different situation since these examples involve minors anyway. I could be wrong, but I think that courts have pretty consistently upheld school administrators rights to search students belongings and censor students speech.

adult or child, does free speech include threats? certainly, people have even been successfully prosecuted for using hateful and destructive language toward another.
