Fantasy Football

It's that time again! I would really like to see some more dedicated players this year as last season half the team stopped updating their rosters by about the halfway point in the season. I have the draft set for tomorrow but that can be changed if necessary.

R.I.P. Captain Lou Albano

Man, 2009 has been a really bad year for 80's icons. Earlier this week I had heard Captain Lou Albano was in hospice care and today I was rather shocked by the news that he had passed away. Yes, he was 76 but it seemed to have happened rather suddenly. Even if you weren't a wrestling fan, who could forget his performances in Cyndi Lauper's various videos? And let's not forget the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!

You will be missed, Lou.

One More For Fantasy Football!

We need just one more person for our Fantasy Football league. Did your team in your current league get destroyed this week? This is your chance for a fresh start! Scroll down for more details.

In other news, the job is going really great but it's taking up pretty much all my time. When I get home I pretty much just want to relax, eat, and watch TV. I'm finding it much more difficult to jam everything I want to do in before I have to go to bed. I guess that's how it is.

Late Start Fantasy Football League

I had a few requests for this, including one from my brother who is the defending champion from last year's league, so I figured I would create a league. Since the season already started, the league won't start until Week 2 of the season. The live draft is scheduled for Wednesday at 7:30 PM Pacific. It is limited to 8 players. Consider the late start a second chance if you totally blew one of your other teams already!

Fantasy Football

If anyone wants to get in on some Fantasy Football action, it's too late to join the league my brother set up. We need at least five more teams to get a decent league going. Last year I kicked everyone's butt so I'm definitely looking for a challenge.

EDIT: We've gotten enough people so thanks a bunch guys. My brother has one more spot for his friend and then we'll be set to go.

Goose Is Cooperstown Bound

I just read that Goose Gossage was voted into the Hall of Fame today. It's kind of crazy that now all these players from when we were kids are being immortalized in Cooperstown. Before Trevor Hoffman, before Marc Davis, there was the Goose. I still have three or four "Goose Saved the Game" pins. Even though he played for the dreaded Yankees, he had some amazing seasons with the Padres, including the 1984 NL Championship season. I'm glad he finally made it in.

If MLB Were the IOC

George Mitchell just dropped a bomb on Major League Baseball, indicating over 80 players as steroid users. Just a quick glance at the list and you'll see chunks of World Series winning teams as well as Cy Young winners, batting champions, MVP's, future Hall of Famer's, and Gold Glove winners. How is the MLB going to deal with this? Time will tell. I was just discussing with my co-worker how other sports have dealt with steroid scandals. The International Olympic Committee has been swift in taking away gold medals from folks like Marion Jones. What if the MLB took away these players awards? World Series rings? It sounds harsh, but what if these players had been caught cheating in some other manner? It will be interesting to see what they do and if it is possible to bring back any credibility to major league baseball.

Fall Back

Ah, my favorite time of the year. I know a lot of folks are whining that we're losing an hour of daylight, but I really don't care about that. What I care about? That extra hour of sleep/staying up. Also, it's the closest thing we'll ever probably get to time travel. So I'm all for the end of Daylight Savings Time. Actually, that gives me an idea for a poll.

In other news, between the Chargers and my fantasy teams, football is kind of making me a little mad this morning. Hopefully things will pick up a bit.

R.I.P. Crush (Brian Adams)

Man, it's sad to see wrestlers dropping like flies. Brian Adams, also known as Crush, is dead. He was popular in the '90s, first as a member of Demolition and then solo as Kona Crush. I remember in the late '90s he took on a biker persona. There is no cause of death yet, so I won't jump to any conclusions, but this an ongoing trend and hopefully something can be done about it.

Last night I had the pleasure of watching Trevor Hoffman get his 500th save. It was pretty cool, especially since it was a win over the Dodgers. It was also the first time I've been to Petco Park, which was amazing, and the first Padres game I've been to in years. When I was growing up, baseball was a very important part of my life. I went to countless Padres games. My room was full of various memorabilia. When my dad died, that all kind of died too. I stopped following baseball all together. When I got to the game yesterday, I realized the only player I knew was still playing for the Padres was Hoffman. I sounded like an old fogey telling my friends about the game I went to back in the late 80's when the Padres were playing the Braves and Dale Murphy hit a game winning home run over Tony Gwynn's head. "Who the hell is Dale Murphy?" my friend asked. This quickly brought me back to reality. Almost all the players I grew up on have retired and I don't really have any new favorites to replace them. I had a blast last night hanging out and watching the game. Hopefully this will be the start of a new wave of fandom for me, a fresh start. I'm keeping my brown and orange hat though, no matter how outdated it makes me look.

Gringo and I came up with a good idea for a theme week on OBNOXIOUS POST WEEK. You thought the emo posts were bad? You want commenters like that R.Kelly lady back? Let's do it. I'll start.

The Lakers suck. Kobe Bryant is a tool.

Emo is so lame that even Fall Out Boy are distancing themselves from it. I know that is true because some dude on the radio said so and everything they say is gospel truth.

Kent Hovind is an idiot.

The PS3 is an overpriced piece of crap.

Worship music is lame.

I don't like babies either.

Bochy To Jump Ship? - MLB - Report: Bochy to leave Padres, become Giants manager

I know most of you guys don't really care about sports. I don't really either. But I do have a special attachment to baseball and the San Diego Padres. As a kid growing up in San Diego, I grew up going to games with my dad, uncle, and brother. It was just a regular, major part of my young life. So I'm quite shocked to read about manager Bruce Bochy jumping ship to the Giants. This is basically an act of treason. It's bad enough he's going to another National League team, but he's going to a freaking division rival. It's crazy. Bochy has been with San Diego forever. He was a catcher for the '84 World Series team. He took the team to their second World Series as a manger in '98. This is a major bummer.

More on The Curse

Alexander sidelined, Madden curse to blame? - Joystiq

I was going to put up a history of the Madden Curse for all you doubters out there, but thankfully someone beat me to the punch.

Here's a brief history of the curse:

* 2000 - Barry Sanders abruptly retires before training camp (was he warned of the impending curse?)
* 2000 - Dorsey Levens is cut by Green Bay the following season
* 2001 - Eddie George enjoys career year, until costly turnover leads to Titan's playoff exit
* 2002 - Daunte Culpepper leads team to dismal 4–7 record before season-ending knee injury
* 2003 - Marshall Faulk suffers ankle injury; career diminishes thereafter
* 2004 - Michael Vick fractures right fibula in preseason game, just one day after Madden is released; sidelined for season
* 2005 - Ray Lewis fails to post a single interception (after grabbing 6 the previous year), and injury forces him to miss the final game of the season; the Ravens also fail to make the playoffs after winning the division in the 2003–2004 season
* 2006 - Donovan McNabb suffers sports hernia in first game and undergoes season-ending surgery in November; T.O. feud escalates; Eagles finish 6–10 after reaching Super Bowl in 2006–2006 season
* 2007 - Shaun Alexander fractures left foot in Week 3 ...

Anyone still have doubts?
