Apple Memories

There are a group of people I guess I would consider my geek forefathers. Without them, I wouldn't be the person I am today. I wouldn't enjoy the things I enjoy now. I definitely wouldn't be in the career I am now. Steve Jobs is definitely one of those people. While the first computer I ever used was my mom's monstrous IBM that my dad sat me in front of before I could even read, the computers that actually planted the seed that would bloom into the geek I am today were the Apple II's in the computer lab at my elementary school. I learned simple BASIC programming and graphics creation using LOGO. I played hours of Lemonade Stand, Oregon Trail, and Gertrude's Secret.

When I was in 4th grade, I was finally old enough to use the shiny Macintosh that actually had a modem. It was so special it had its own desk at the front of the library. It was on this computer that I first connected to an educational BBS and sent my first email. In high school I played my first LAN game on a Mac Performa. My fellow geeky classmates and I had managed to sneak in a copy of Marathon and install it on a bunch of the computers and we would play over the AppleTalk network during our computer class and after school.

Fast forward almost twenty years and even though I've never actually owned an Apple computer, I'm still being influenced by the creation of Jobs and Wozniak. For this, I am forever grateful.

Duke Nukem Forever Has Gone Gold

Duke Nukem Forever goes gold, will meet promised June deadline (really!) -- Engadget

New York, NY May 24, 2011 - 2K Games and Gearbox Software are proud to announce that Duke Nukem Forever®, one of the most anticipated entertainment properties of all time, has "gone gold" and will be available at retailers on June 10, 2011 internationally and on June 14, 2011 in North America. The road to gold was paved over the course of 15 years and its legendary path climaxes on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Windows PC. Gamers who pre-order the title from select outlets will ensure that they are among the first to experience this legendary piece of gaming history when the demo* launches on June 3, 2011 for all platforms, exclusively for Duke Nukem First Access Club Members.

Is anyone actually getting this? I just can't bring myself to do it. There is no possible way it can meet expectations. Except maybe it has been so long, there are no expectations, so just the fact that the game is coming out is a win. I don't know.

Special thanks to Danny for getting the bookmarklet working again. Hopefully I will post more in the blog because of this, but no promises.

Amazon Fail

I'm having a problem and when I really start to think about it, I know it's a really silly thing, but it still bums me out. I love Amazon Prime. It's one of my favorite things. I like that I can order an item when it is on sale and not have to spend at least $25 for free shipping and I get it insanely fast. It especially makes holiday shopping a breeze. One of the highly touted features of Amazon Prime is free Release Date Delivery for select items such as video games and movies. This has been pretty awesome, up until now.

Several weeks ago I ordered the Collector's Edition of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Yeah, I'm playing WoW again. That happened. Anyways, the product featured the much famed Release Date Delivery but to my disdain when I got home from work yesterday it was not there. I checked the tracking number and it showed the item as still in transit. It hadn't even shipped until that morning. Even though the Amazon tracking was still touting my delivery date as December 7th, Fedex was saying the real story. I wouldn't be flying in Azeroth until the 8th. Yes, I know, it's only one day. But I can't play today. Or tomorrow. I was all set to play yesterday. If I had known Amazon could not deliver on their advertised service, I would have purchased the Blizzard direct download so I could play the game as soon as it launched.

A strongly worded email to Amazon received a form email reply that didn't even address my actual issue and a promo certificate for $10 so they could get me to spend more money. I'm going to call today to try and talk to a person. I don't want money, I just want to know what happened and why I should ever buy something for release date delivery ever again. For a minute I almost swore off Amazon all together, but I know everyone makes mistakes, even awesome shopping websites. I did cancel my video game pre-orders I had with them, at least for now.

Update: I just got off the phone with Amazon. I am very pleased with their customer service. I was able to talk to someone on the phone immediately. I guess their initial form response just really rubbed me the wrong way. The person I spoke to on the phone gave me an explanation, which is really all I wanted. I don't think that was too much to ask for. All is well.

Video of the Day: R-Rated Mortal Kombat Short

This is pretty awesome. It's a short directed by Keven Tancharoen to try and build some interested in an R-Rated Mortal Kombat movie. The video is probably NSFW, so beware. I think this could be a really good idea, especially with Michael Jai White as Jax. What do you think?

I Don't Know...

Yes, I am doing something I hate when others do it but I feel bad that this once great blog is just sitting here. I just got a notification that someone commented on the Pinch Hitter 2 post again. Nice to know that's still bringing in the readers after all this time. I guess I just feel like I don't have much to say these days. LOST is over, I have been coping by watching large amounts of South Park on Netflix Instant Watch. I don't know what one has to do with the other, but South Park is really, really funny. I got Red Dead Redemption and have played it in small spurts. It's pretty sweet. That's pretty much all that is going on right now. Feel free to suggest post topics in the comments if you really, really care.

Video of the Day: GoldenEye Stand-Off

CollegeHumor doesn't seem to have embed codes so you'll have to go here to watch the humorous video that will appeal to anyone who ever spent any amount of time running around The Temple hunting for the Golden Gun. The Odd Job scene probably rang most true to me. Thanks to Bill for sharing it with me.

This is pretty much all that's going on in my life besides work. Well, this and all the rain.

New TV

Before you go thinking it's not that impressive, here is what I had before:

Tv and xbox

Yeah. I was one of those guys that was always saying that HD just doesn't seem worth it, I'll never buy a Blu-Ray disc, it's all a big rip off. Then I plugged in the TV, plugged in the antenna, and proceeded to watch the news in HD for an hour. Never mind the HD gaming, Blu-Rays, and other awesomeness. I am no longer a naysayer.

Letting the Days Go By

I don't know how it happened, but I'm hopelessly addicted to Animal Crossing again, this time on the Wii. I didn't think I would be that into it since it's so similar to the DS version, but really that is all I need. My schedule literally rotates around the freaking selling of turnips. Turnips! I wake up 5 minutes early now so I can check the prices before I go to work and I make sure to get on before the store closes at night so I can check them again. I also wake up early on Sunday to buy them from Joan. OMG you guys it's like 2006 all over again.

As I've said before, I'm a total OCD gamer. Even if the rest of the world thinks a game sucks, if it involves collecting things or reaching some kind of percentage, I will most likely love it and play it obsessively. Right now I am also addicted to Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii. Not for it's awesome multiplayer fun, mind you. I haven't even tried that. I am obsessed because there are over 500 trophies to collect as well as a couple hundred stickers, also some achievements, secret characters to unlock, and who knows what else. You're tearing me apart, Wii!

Link of the Day: Donate Games

I read an article in the paper (yeah, those floppy paper things with printing on them we used to read in Social Studies) about Donate Games, an organization in Dana Point that is pretty awesome. They accept donated games from all systems, which are tax deductible, and sell the games on their site for a reasonable price. All money collected goes to raise money for research for rare diseases. You'll probably get more out of your tax deductible receipt than you'll ever get from Gamestop and it's for a good cause. I just bought a few DS games I've been looking for that are usually a tad on the expensive side or just plain hard to find. Check it out!

WTF of the Day: Frys In Store Pickup Is Useless

So I want to buy a Wii. Apparently between Saturday afternoon when I saw Wiis everywhere and last night when I went to buy a Wii, everyone went Wii crazy and bought them all. They were sold out everywhere in my area. So just now I went to and was very excited to see that the Wii was available for in-store pickup according to their site. This is the screen I saw when I tried to check out:

Hooray! I can go pick up my Wii after work and that is the end of that business. Nope. Sorry. A couple minutes later I get this email:

Dear Brendan Creecy,
Your order IS NOT READY for pick up because the following items are not available in the store at this time:

Item(s) Req Qty Aval Qty

You may come to the store list below to pick up your available item(s) if desired or follow this link to cancel your order. apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

WTF???? I feel like Jerry in that episode of Seinfeld when the rental car lady tells him they have no cars available after he made a reservation. The stinking site said "available." I don't think knows what available means. Seriously.

New WoW Patch Is Tempting Me

I just read about a new patch in WoW that allows players to queue up for dungeons. It sounds pretty awesome:

Basically you can now queue up for a dungeon (just like you would with a Battlefield PvP match) and the game will match you up with like-minded adventurers and appropriate classes. Once you're in a group with a range of healers, DPSers and tanks, and everyone checks their ready mark, the game will automatically teleport the group right inside the dungeon for nigh-instant adventuring.

If I had to narrow down my gripes with WoW to one thing, it would be finding groups for dungeons and now that seems to be resolved. Yes, it's not the same as playing with people you know and there is room for a lot of potential disaster, but I think the good definitely outweighs the bad. That being said, I have absolutely no time for WoW and I'm sure now that I would be able to crawl dungeons at will the game would pretty much consume any free time I have. However, if this feature had been in the game when I was playing all the time, I probably never would have left. Perhaps it's for the best then that it wasn't.

P.S. for those wondering: I haven't logged in in over 2 years. Man, time flies.

Now I Must Have a Wii

Holy crap. Excitebike World Rally + Epic Mickey = I officially have to have a Wii. I've really enjoyed playing Wii at my various friends' houses but I keep putting off buying one. I don't think I can for much longer.

Happy Talk Like A Pirate Day - Free Monkey Island Game!

In honor of Talk Like A Pirate Day you can download the first chapter of Telltale Games' new Tales of Monkey Island series for free by going here. You have to hurry though as it's only available until midnight tonight. Sorry Mac folks, it's only for PC. I've been looking forward to playing this game, which is also available on XBLA and on WiiWare, and this is a great way to give it a whirl!

In My Life

I don't have much to say right now except work is pretty darn good, the new Beatles remasters are pretty magical, and I want The Beatles Rock Band more than anything right now. I'm being a good boy though.

Oh! Tomorrow marks the release of the 50th strip at Brax the Alien Rocker. I'll probably post about in again in case you all forget, but Phil and I are both pretty happy about it. We are actually going to have a table at the Los Angeles Comic Book and SciFi Convention on Sunday where we will be passing out free stickers and giving high fives. If that isn't enough to get you there, Larry Hama (creator of the G.I. Joe comic) will be there with several of the original G.I. Joe cartoon voice cast as well as Juliet Landau of Buffy and Ed Wood fame.

Forget About My Birthday...

We're only two days away from the release of Ghostbusters: The Video Game. I earned a $25 Gamestop card from E-Rewards and I'm really hoping it comes in the mail before then, otherwise I'll have to wait to buy the game I've been looking forward to pretty much my whole life. While some might think that sounds a tad dramatic, anyone who has played the original Ghostbusters game knows exactly what I'm talking about.

On the job front, a friend of mine got me a phone interview at his company for a tech support position and now I'm just waiting to hear back about an in-person interview. People keep asking me what I want for my birthday and the only thing I can really respond with (besides the aforementioned video game) is a job. I'm hoping that wish will come true very soon.

1 vs. 100 LIVE Beta

If you're a trivia fanatic like me then you have to try out 1 vs. 100 LIVE on Xbox. I played the first U.S. beta on Monday and it was a total blast. Basically it's like the game show, complete with live host, but you play at home on your console with 50,000+ other people. 100 people are chosen as "The Mob" who compete against one player who is chosen to be "The One." The other people playing are part of the crowd and play along to earn sweepstakes entries and to be in the top three players. According to the game's site, your chances to be in either The Mob or to be The One increase the more you play and the higher your score is. Once the Beta is over players will be competing for Microsoft Points but right now you can earn entries to win a plasma TV and other prizes. The next episode is tonight at 5:00 PM pacific, which is pretty soon.

It's Not Goldeneye, But It Will Do - Perfect Dark Coming to XBLA

Just read this via Major Nelson's Twitter feed:

In the booth. Just saw Perfect Dark on XBLA running 1080p. It is coming to XBLA this winter. Free theme coming tomorrow!

While I'm still bummed we probably will never get Goldeneye on XBLA, this news makes me happy. While it wasn't quite the multiplayer timesink that 007 was, Perfect Dark should still be a lot of fun to play online. I for one am definitely looking forward to some Laptop Gun carnage.

Zero Punctuation Reviews Duke Nukem Forever

R.I.P. Duke Nukem Forever?

Many would say (myself included probably) that Duke Nukem Forever has been dead for a long time. Even so, the news that 3D Realms, the developer of the most famous vaporware ever, has shut down pretty much puts the last nail in the coffin. A coffin which contains a few screenshots and one teaser video that didn't even include actual gameplay footage. I would just encourage any other developers out there even thinking about buying the property (if that is even possible) to take two steps back. It's done. Time to move on. Yes, I'll admit that there was still a teeny tiny sliver of hope inside me that thought maybe one day I'd actually see this game that I've been teased with since I was in high school. I'm dumb like that sometimes. If you're looking for a little perspective, this site will give it to you in spades. It's an entertaining look at the game's checkered past. In closing, if anyone out there still thinks that this game might be released, please contact me. I have some investment opportunities you might be interested in.

Link of the Day: Super NES Quiz

The folks at Mental Floss know how to do a quiz right and this one is definitely up there with their best. I got 12 out of 13 only because I totally forgot about Pilotwings. I'm not even sure if I ever played it.

Quake Live Launches Public Beta

I found out about this via Felicia Day's Twitter feed and quickly signed up, only to find out the queue to play was over 50,000 users strong. Basically it's a web based version of Quake, which looks super awesome and could be a lot of fun. We could share our usernames and play each other and all that cool stuff, like we used to do with Gunbound and various other games. Hopefully the queue thing will die down soon and that can happen. If you do get in and want to add me as a friend, my handle is BrendoMan.

Edit: I got in! Just leave your browser open once you're in the queue. Then you can download the client and do your skill test while the rest of the game downloads. It's very fun. My profile is here.
